Officials at the world's largest Baptist university have warned students that posing for Playboy magazines could lead to unpleasant consequences. Photographers from the magazine featuring pictures of nude women spent two days interviewing female Baylor University students at a Waco hotel this week. Selected photos will appear as part of a "Girls of the Big 12 Conference" spread in October. Last week, Baylor officials sent an e-mail to students reminding that those "associating with a magazine that is clearly antithetical to Baylor's mission" would be subject to discipline. Baylor spokeswoman Lori Fogleman says possible punishment could range from a warning to expulsion. In , a Baylor student who posed nude in Playboy's Big 12 issue was suspended, although her picture didn't appear in the print version of the magazine.

Baylor University, a Baptist school known for prohibiting on-campus dancing and censuring female students who posed for Playboy magazine, has decided to offer a nude figure drawing class for the first time in its year history. Starting next fall, female models will pose unclothed for the course although male models must wear at least athletic supporters, Mike Bishop, vice president for communications, said Monday in a call from Waco, Texas. None of the models will be Baylor students or associated in any way with the university, which maintains strong Southern Baptist ties although it no longer is controlled by the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the denomination's governing body in the state, he said. After several months' study, the eight-member academic affairs committee of Baylor regents approved the advanced figure drawing class with nude models as a necessary part of the art curriculum, Bishop said. Approval by the full regents board is not required. Figure drawing classes had been offered in the past, Bishop said, "but we've always made sure the models wore some type of clothing, such as bathing suits. Baylor recognizes that some students will be uncomfortable working with a nude model and will permit them to draw a clothed model, the university spokesman said. Moreover, privacy of students and models will be assured.
